Scott Ligon is a member of NRBQ, writing and singing R&B and rock songs along with playing guitar. He’s a big part of The Flat Five, a Chicago-based pop vocal super-group, and Scott is a member of the Western Elstons, also a Chicago-based band that plays country, honky tonk and rock music. But years before he was associated with any of those fine bands, he told the Reader, “I’ve completely stopped thinking of music in terms of the music business. As far as I’m concerned, there is no music business. I don’t care about selling anything… When you’re a kid and you tell somebody, ‘I want to be a musician,’ they think that you mean, ‘I want to be famous. I want to be a star.’ I never wanted to be a star. I just wanted to play good music.” And that he does, whether solo or in a band.
In addition to the instruments he usually plays: guitar, piano, and Hammond organ – Scott plays accordion, bass, drums, harmonica, autoharp, jaw harp, tenor sax, vibraphone, and “a little bit of banjo.” His bandmate in the Western Elstons, Joel Paterson said of Scott, “He can imitate a lot of styles, but he always sounds like himself. And he’s so natural. He’s not schooled at all. He barely knows the names of the notes he’s playing, but he can outplay anybody. He’s really good technically, but he’s also free-spirited. He’s always kind of flying by the seat of his pants, but it all works out in the end.”
Sharon Rutledge, Scott’s wife, is a musician, animator (she did The Flat Five video for Look at the Birdy) and massage therapist, who often joins Scott onstage.
