Date: Friday, May 17

Don Dixon‘s songwriting, music and production skills are admired by music lovers everywhere. He currently plays bass in Mary Chapin Carpenter’s band. But, since Dixon hasn’t been touring on his own much lately and his songs were popular some 30 years ago, you might need a refresher. Dixon doesn’t have a website, so look at the Wikipedia page on him and note that he produced REM’s first two records – their finest in the eyes of many fans. He’s also produced records by the Smithereens, Marshall Crenshaw, Guadalcanal Diary, James McMurtry and The Gin Blossoms and has written songs recorded by Joe Cocker, Ronnie Spector, Hootie & The Blowfish and Counting Crows, among others. And what about Dixon’s own voice on his own songs? There’s Praying Mantis, Borrowed Time (with backing vocals by his wife, Marti Jones), and Heart in a Box (recorded at a Chi-Town budget show broadcast on WXRT from the Park West in 1988). His more recent albums have moved from pop into soul – check out Gimme Little Sign (Jones on backing vocals) and I Can Hear The River (live). Dixon rarely performs solo these days, but I’ve coaxed him out to play at Molly’s House Concerts on Friday, May 17. RSVP now!
